A fellowship of people with cochlear implants

Welcome to the Cicada Club

Manchester Cicada Club was started originally for those people who had received their implant at the Manchester Centre and their families; membership has since been extended to anyone who has a cochlear implant . As an association of people who have had implant operations, its purpose is to establish a bond and fellowship between these people through social events and related activities and by sharing experiences to help post operative implantees gain the maximum benefit from the operation. Because of our origins, we work closely with the Manchester Implant team and have provided volunteers for research projects over the years.

As a group we meet once a year for our annual conference where we invite guest speakers to talk on a wide range of issues. At our last AGM we had a presentation by Mr Kevin Green (he is the gentleman on the left of the photograph), the lead implant surgeon at the Manchester centre, who showed us all the new and exciting developments that are now coming along. He was also able to answer questions from the audience. A full report of his presentation is included in the latest issue of the Resound Magazine which is produced twice yearly.

Another recent presentation was given by the Manager of the Social Services team dealing with Deaf and Hard of hearing people about the recent changes in entitlement for allowances and disability benefits. This resulted in at least two of the audience qualifying for grants which they did not realise they were entitled to !

There are a variety of social events when we meet informally as a group at activity centres such as the Martin Mere Wetlands trust near Ormskirk and last summer we all got together for a barbeque in North Wales.

With over half the operations carried out at Manchester last year being for children we are encouraging parents to get in touch so we can organise more children centered events. Membership is free for the first year and you can join online from this website by clicking the link below.
